People often imagine that becoming part of a community begins with making a commitment to the community itself. Our experience has taught us something different.
Relationships often begin much more naturally—through ordinary work, shared responsibilities, meals, projects, conversations, and the practical challenges of life.
Saco River Farms in Steep Falls, Maine has served for many years as a working environment where farming, food production, business, hospitality, practical skills, and community life intersect.
A Simpler Place to Begin
In earlier years, Fields of Zion and Saco River Farms explored formal internships and homesteading apprenticeships as ways for people to experience this kind of life.
Over time, we discovered that relationships and responsibility often develop better when they are allowed to grow naturally rather than being predetermined by a program.
Today, one of the simplest ways to begin is simply to work alongside us.
Saco River Farms periodically offers paid employment in its farm market, goat dairy, livestock operations, gardens, food production, and other areas of farmstead life. These are real jobs in a real working farm business.
Without Predetermining the Outcome
Employment at Saco River Farms is not an application to join a community. It does not imply a ministry position, housing arrangement, residency, apprenticeship, or future community placement.
Someone may become a valued employee and never desire anything beyond that. That is perfectly fine.
But working together gives people an opportunity to know one another in ways that applications and conversations alone cannot. Character, reliability, gifts, interests, and the ability to carry responsibility become visible through ordinary life.
Sometimes those relationships remain good working relationships. Sometimes they grow into friendship, fellowship, greater responsibility, or opportunities that could not have been planned in advance.
We are content to let those things develop naturally.
